Roma Craft is a boutique cigar company based out of Texas. Their cigars have been a cornerstone for many in their cigar journey. They pride themselves on combining quality tobacco with experienced craftsmanship. Their cigars are a great representation of their philosophy. The subject of this review is the Volstead George Remus. Take a look, and consider adding it to your humidor.
The Volstead has a simple, but eye catching presentation. The main band is white, with "Intemperance" printed on it. There is also an imprint of Roma Craft's snake on the side of the band. The accent band is brown, with "Volstead" printed in bold letters. The cigar itself has a dark brown wrapper. The wrapper is a little oily, and shows a few veins throughout the cigar. That being said, the cigar is smooth to touch overall. It also has an exposed foot.
The Volstead has a variety of tobaccos in its construction. It's constructed with Dominican Corojo and Nicaraguan Fillers, Mexican San Andreas Binder, and Ecuadorian Sumatra Wrapper. The cigar has a smooth draw, and allows the smoke to hit the palate with ease. The ash is gray, and sturdy. The ash does fall until about the 2 inch mark, and even then it probably could have gone on longer. The foot doesn't flake after ashing. The burn can be a little jagged, but nothing worth touching up.
The flavor profile on the Volstead is nice. It's like having a peppery steak with a mocha. The cold draw has notes of dried fruit and milk chocolate. At first light, you may get strong notes of black pepper, earth, and a meatiness that stays throughout the smoke.
The first third starts with strong notes of black pepper, along with some prominent notes of graham cracker. These are accompanied by notes of earth, cedar, and a very mild sulphur flavor. The retrohale on the first third may have notes of black pepper, cocoa powder, and pastry.
The second third provides strong notes of earth, along with that meatiness. The black pepper notes become a little more subdued, along with undertones of dark roast coffee, graham cracker, and bakers chocolate. The retrohale on the second third may give notes of damp earth, black pepper, and pastry.
The final third may have strong notes of dark roast coffee and bakers chocolate. Notes of black pepper start to creep back up on the palate. These are accompanied with subtle notes of cumin, red pepper, and that sulphur flavor again. The retrohale on the final third may feature notes of black pepper and cocoa powder.
The cigar finishes with strong notes of black pepper and earth, along with hints of dark roast coffee and meatiness.
The Volstead has a great price point. A single stick can go for around $9.19, while a box of 24 can go for around $194.99. Given the flavor profile and construction, this is well worth the price. Even if it was priced at the $11 price point, it would be worth the experience.
Given everything involved in this cigar, the Volstead is a great choice for a veteran smoker. Intermediate smokers will enjoy it, but even they may be a little stand off to the full bodied cigar. This is not recommended for beginners.
