Micallef is slowly becoming a staple brand in lounges across the US. They have initiated a lot of cigar community outreach programs, such as the Ambassador Program and the Fave 5. Of course, none of this would mean anything if they made bad cigars, which they don't. The subject of this review, the Micallef Black, is the newest cigar in their catalog.
The Micallef Black has a very simple appearance. The cigar features a black band with gold accents and lettering. Prominently featured is the Micallef family crest. It's simple, but not quite as eye catching as some of the other cigars in their lineup. The cigar itself features a dark brown wrapper. The wrapper is a little toothy. There are some veins that show, but is overall smooth to touch.
The Micallef Black is constructed with a Nicaraguan Filler, Ecuadorian Habano Binder, and Mexican San Andreas Maduro Wrapper. The cigar has a smooth draw throughout, and allows a decent amount of smoke, which allows the palate to pick up all the nuanced flavor notes. The ash is a light gray, almost white, and falls around the 2 inch mark. The foot does not flake after ashing. The burn starts off even, but does have a tendency to canoe in the second third. Touch ups may be needed throughout the smoke, depending on your preferences.
The flavor profile on the Micallef Black is very good. The cold draw provides notes of earth and dark chocolate, while the first light may feature notes of heavy earth, dark coffee, and cedar.
The first third may feature notes of earth, dark chocolate, and cedar. These base notes are accompanied by mild notes of ginger, nougat, almond, and flour. The retrohale on the first third may feature notes of black pepper and cedar.
The second third may feature heavy notes of black pepper, earth, and dark coffee, while notes of dark chocolate and cedar move to the back of the palate. Subtle notes of must, ginger, and almond can also be tasted, which helps break up the black pepper and earth notes. The retrohale on the second third may feature notes of dark chocolate and black pepper.
The final third may feature strong notes of dark coffee and black pepper, with mild notes of molasses and earth. Subtle undertones of must, earth, and ginger linger on the palate, along with a subtle note of nougat. The retrohale on the final third may feature notes of black pepper and dark chocolate.
The Micallef Black finishes with strong notes of dark coffee, earth, and almond, with hints of dark chocolate.
The Micallef Black is priced very well. With the toro going for around $8.00 per stick, and $200.00 for a box of 25, this cigar is priced almost perfectly. It's the perfect cigar for someone who wants a great smoke for a price that won't break the bank.
The flavor profile on the Micallef Black is a little complex, but not enough to overpower the palate. While the appearance does leave a bit to be desired, it shouldn't be skipped over when picking your next smoke. It is a heavier-bodied cigar, so it isn't recommended for newer cigar smokers. However, intermediate and veteran cigar smokers will enjoy it's smoking experience and flavor profile with ease.
