Oscar Valladares has become a household name in the cigar community in the past few years. Valladares Tobacco & Co. is a company that brings inspiration from names like Rocky Patel, Oliva, and General Cigar company to their brand prior to establishing their own line. Oscar Valladares cigars have established a reputation for jumping off the shelves for their flavor and presentation.
This cigar is presented on a shelf wrapped in a tobacco leaf, immediately catching the eye. This is a very impressive strategy, because it allows the smoker to actually see what is wrapped within the oily Corojo wrapper, giving an added benefit to the smoke. The band on the cigar is simple, but elegant. Simple words with the name and manufacturer are printed on the almost cloth-like band. A very interesting and unique way of presenting a fine cigar.
The Leaf Corojo is constructed with a Corojo wrapper, Honduran filler and binder. The burn is even for the most part, and doesn't divert into a canoed burn or tunneling. The draw is smooth, but not loose enough that the flavor escapes the palate. While the burn and the draw are smooth and even, the ash can be flaky and unsteady. This can cause the ash to fall prematurely. Granted, this isn't a big deal, but it can cause some aggravation when you ash yourself, and you're only two inches from an ashtray.
The Leaf Corojo is packed with a variety of flavors and aromas. The first third is filled with notes of earth, pepper, and spice. While these can cause a robust and off-putting profile, they blend well enough together to not cause an unpleasant bite in the back of the throat. The second third keeps the theme of pepper and earth, while introducing notes of cedar into the mix. The aromas with the retrohale allow for more in depth experience with the pepper notes. While they may be strong, it's well worth it. The final third allows the pepper notes to calm down, leaving the draw open to the rich earth and cedar notes.
The price point on the Leaf Corojo is reasonable and competitive. A single stick goes for around $9.50, while a bundle of twenty goes for around $190.00. A decent price for a great cigar.
