HVC has been a staple in many cigar lounges throughout the US in recent years. Cigars like the Black Friday made HVC a common name. Their newest cigar, the Hot Cake Golden Line Laguito No. 5, is an expansion of their Hot Cake brand, and it doesn't disappoint. Check out the review, and consider adding this cigar to your rotation.
The Hot Cake Golden Line has a simple, but regal presentation. The wrapper is light brown in color, and shows a few veins. However, the cigar is smooth to touch overall. The band is gold, with regal stippling all across. The center of the band features a red circle with the HVC logo. The foot band is all black, with gold accents and lettering that reads "Golden Line".
The Hot Cake Golden Line is constructed with Nicaraguan Fillers from Esteli and Jalapa, Nicaraguan Binder, and Ecuadorian Connecticut Wrapper. The draw is smooth, and produces a decent amount of smoke to hit the palate properly. The ash is a very light gray, and falls at around the one and a half inch mark. While it does flake a little after ashing the first time, the foot stays sturdy going forward. The burn does have a tendency to be a slightly uneven throughout the smoke, but may not be worth touching up.
The cold draw on the Hot Cake Golden Line has notes of dried fruit, earth, and cinnamon. At first light, the cigar comes off strong with heavy notes of black pepper, earth, and mild cream.
The first third may feature strong notes of black pepper and earth. Undertones of espresso and graham cracker may also be tasted. Subtler notes of thyme and cumin also hit the palate, but fade away quickly. The retrohale on the first third may feature notes of red pepper, brown sugar, and ginger.
As the smoke moves into the second third, the flavor profile becomes milder. Notes of earth, cream, and coffee hit the palate right away, while mild notes of toffee, hazelnut, and nutmeg linger. There may also be very subtle notes of baker's chocolate that come and go, and add a little complexity to the experience. The retrohale on the second third may feature notes of pastry, red pepper, cocoa, and fruit.
The final third of the cigar may feature prominent notes of cream, toffee, and moss. These are accompanied by subtle notes of baker's chocolate, coffee, and earth. undertones of black pepper and ginger can also be tasted in the final third. The retrohale of the final third may feature notes of pastry, red pepper, and cocoa.
The Hot Cake Golden Line is priced at $10.00 for a single Laguito No. 5, and $250.00 for a box of 25. The cost of $10 for one cigar is good, especially when considering the flavor profile and construction. While the burn can be a little uneven and jagged at times, it doesn't take away from the experience, or value of the cigar.
This is a great cigar for a beginner. While it starts of strong, the richness of the flavors provided by the tobacco, and lingering smoke will make for a great experience for a beginner. Intermediate and veteran smokers will also appreciate its strong start and flavor profile.
