Foundation Cigars have, well, laid a foundation for boutique cigars. With Nick Melillo at the helm, Foundations cigars have been on countless lists for some of the best cigars on the market. While some will prices in the mid to high teens, the cigar under review today is the budget friendly Charter Oak Maduro. This review is best paired with the Great Cigars Podcast: Cigar Spotlight of the Foundation Charter Oak Maduro.
The Charter Oak Maduro appearance is simple and modest. The band features off white coloring, with yellow accents and an oak tree in the center. The cigar itself is an oily, dark brown Maduro wrapper.
The Charter Oak Maduro is constructed with a Nicaraguan filler, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. The ash falls at around an inch, and has no flakes flying off the foot afterwards. The draw is smooth and easy, allowing every flavor note to hit the palate. The burn does need some touchups here and there.
The first-third will feature strong notes of leather and dark chocolate, which is owed to the wrapped foot. Notes of oak and black pepper are prominent, with notes of dark chocolate on the retrohale. The second-third will feature strong notes of dark chocolate and black pepper. These are accompanied with notes of dried fruit, and black pepper and oak on the retrohale. The final third features notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, and dried fruit on the retrohale.
The Charter Oak Maduro Toro goes for around $6.60 a stick, and $132.00 for a box of 20. While the cigar does have a simple, yet delicious flavor profile, and some minor burn issues, the Charter Oak Maduro is well worth the price.
The Charter Oak Maduro is a great everyday smoke for advanced intermediate cigar smokers, and veterand smokers alike. While the profile may be a little strong for a beginner cigars smoker, it will definitely be something to look forward to on the cigar smoking journey.
